Impressions from the PHILIPS-ECOLIGHT Training Camp in Dubingiai, Lithuania

It is hard to explain but ECOLIGHT seems to attract a very special kind of business people. If a stranger were to wonder upon our company’s distributor meeting in Dubingiai, Lithuania (28-30 June 2017), he would be excused for thinking he intruded on a college reunion. Our partners are truly a laid-back, party-loving group of lighting industry professionals.

The ECOLIGHT crew was happy to host guests from Slovenia (Erco I), Jordan (C3E), Czech Republic (NBB), Italy (Manled), Latvia (Proelektro), the Netherlands (Philips Lighting), Poland (INS Lighting and Philips Lighting), and Lithuania (Usi International and Lankava).

Complicated Made Simple

A special thank-you goes to Mr. Sjef Jansen from Philips headquarters in the Netherlands. Mr. Jansen traveled from Eindhoven to a Lithuanian lakeside to deliver a talk on ‘Philips Components: Advantages Against Competition’. In what was a very detailed and informative presentation, Mr. Jansen masterfully explained the internal engineering behind Philips’ state-of-the-art LED products.

But he also set out the main challenges lying ahead for ECOLIGHT’s distributors. “You may have all the technical advantages in the world,” said Mr. Jansen, “But in the end your sales will depend on how capable you are at translating engineering into marketing”.

As a response, ECOLIGHT’s managing director Tomas Pukas reminded our partners about ECOLIGHT’s brand message. He first showed the audience an old commercial from Volkswagen. In this 1969 commercial of a VW Beetle, we see a rather clumsy looking U.S. Lunar Module, the first of many lunar excursion modules to land on the Moon. And then the punchline: "It's Ugly, but It Gets You There."

Mr. Pukas explained that ECOLIGHT’s own tagline – ‘No Nonsense, Just Raw Efficiency’ -delivers a similar message. Our end-customers are happy to pay for cost-efficiency (state-of-the-art Philips lighting solutions), but never for nonsense (inessentials like posh design).

Flicker Meter Experiment

A lot of what happened in the camp should stay in the camp... But broader audiences may well be interested to learn about our flicker meter experiment. What we did during one of the training sessions was test a variety of luminaires from different manufacturers using Flicker Meter and Spectrometer.

Light flicker refers to quick, recurrent changes in light intensity – light that appears to flutter and shine unsteadily. Too much flicker is indicative of poor lighting, and can cause migraine and fatigue, not to mention impoverished vision. A flicker meter allows to evaluate the quality of luminaires without opening them up. A flicker meter shows data on flickering, light wavelength, light wave frequency, color recognition and other crucial lighting parameters.

Next up – Octoberfest!

As you can see in the pictures, we had a good time together. During events like this, a network of business partners is transformed into a family. Aside from learning, mastering new technologies and sharing business experiences, we share laughters, we share our life stories, and we grow closer together. A tighter community means higher levels of trust, and trust is the key to any lasting business relationship.

In the words of Mark Twain, “there ain’t no surer way to find out whether you like people or hate them than to travel with them”. Our partners took time from their busy schedules to spend three days on a picturesque Lithuanian lakeside. And they found out something important about their partners. They are in business with people they trust and like.

What’s next? Mr. Ralph Müller, general manager at RMBH GmbH, has invited our entire business community for a weekend of Oktoberfest adventures in Germany. And Mr. Joze Erjavec, general manager at ERCO I, is already planning his response! Joze is proceeding ahead with plans to take the ECOLIGHT team and our distributors on an autumn yacht trip in the Adriatic Sea.

Good times ahead!
